CELTA is the original TEFL course and the global industry standard in English teaching. It provides the initial training leading to the Cambridge English Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) needed for new teachers to enter the industry and an important addition for existing teachers who wish to build on their existing skills. CELTA enables you to obtain your first English teaching position or to improve on your current teaching situation. The course is highly regarded by employers around the world as it provides sound training and a strong basis from which one can continue to develop into a highly effective teacher of English. Indeed, in many parts of the world, including Prague, employers simply won't consider applicants who have not passed the CELTA.
Our CELTA courses are attended by people with a truly wide variety of professional and cultural backgrounds and experience and very often long-term international friendships are started during the course.
Despite being created for those with no experience or formal training, many of our participants choose to take the course to add to their existing university teaching qualifications; either to learn more modern (now also online) classroom methods or to be coached and observed by experienced, Cambridge certified, teacher trainers.
AKCENT IH Prague offer both full time and part time CELTA courses, in order to match our participants’ availability and circumstances. Part time courses seem to be proving particularly popular now, during the Pandemic, and so we offer a range of different part time schedules.
Online: All Live | On this Zoom-based course will have you participate in Teaching Practice, Feedback meetings and Lesson Planning Consultations as well as synchronously delivered Seminars. The schedule very much mirrors a standard face2face course. You spend more time in interaction with your colleagues and tutors, have endless opportunities to ask questions and feel a member of the group. |
Online: with live teaching practice and pre-recorded seminars | On this Zoom/Moodle based course you will participate in live Teaching Practice sessions, Feedback and Lesson Planning Consultation at a scheduled time, but about 30% of the course will be done asynchronously, i.e. whenever you have the time and the energy. The portfolio of Recorded Seminars with tasks to complete in your own time are a product of International House London and Cambridge Assessment organisations and, therefore, promise great quality. |
Face to face | Whenever the pandemic situation allows us, we intend to start running our face to face courses, in real classrooms. We very much hope that our June 2021 course will be offered on our lovely premises in Prague 4. |
Teaching practice is a significant part of the course, and is valued the most highly by our course participants. The benefit of online CELTA is to become an expert in online teaching.
The teaching practice includes guided preparation, analysis and reflection on the lesson. Each trainee teaches for a total of eight 45-minute lessons with two groups of students at two different levels of ability. Teaching practice is organised in small groups of 5-6 trainees who also observe each other. Each teaching practice session is followed by a group feedback session, led by your course tutor, as well as a detailed, personalised written feedback and assessment of each lesson. In addition to feedback, there are one-on-one tutorials to monitor and discuss progress through the course.
CELTA is awarded to candidates who have completed the course and who have met the assessment criteria for lesson planning, teaching and for written assignments. The outcome of the course is decided on a continuous assessment basis, there is no final examination. The grades for successful candidates are PASS, PASS A or PASS B.

VISA Information
The Czech Republic joined the European Union in May 2004. Currently residents of the Eurpean Union, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not need entry visas to enter the Czech Republic. At this time, foreign nationals from South Africa and other nations may need an entry visa. If you do need a visa, contact your nearest Czech Embassy for details.
We advise those intending to stay and seek work to obtain a multiple entry visa as the process of getting the necessary work / resident permits involves leaving the country. The usual allowed stay is for 90 days though of course this depends on whether or not your passport was stamped on entering the country. If your home country does not appear on the table, we suggest you contact your nearest Czech Embassy BEFORE deciding which course you wish to apply for as for some countries obtaining the visa can be a lenghty process.

In particularly busy periods, such as the summer, when the prices for accommodation surge up, we also rent rooms in the Volha Dormitory of the University of Chemistry and Technology. Each CELTA trainee will be staying in one single room, sharing a bathroom with another trainee's room. Applicants staying at the dormitories will also have access to internet, laundry areas and a shared kitchen space.
