DELTA

The Delta Modules are intended to offer candidates who have substantial experience of teaching English to adult speakers of other languages the opportunity to:

  • acquire new insights into this area and a deeper understanding of the principles and practice of ELT to adults;
  • examine their current practices and beliefs;
  • apply the results of their learning and reflection to their current professional lives and to circumstances beyond their present and previous teaching experience.

The course programme is designed to include the following areas:

Module One:

This module takes the form of an exam, with two 90-minute papers. It can be taken at the beginning of June or December. You don’t have to take a course to prepare, but it is recommended.

Focus on background to teaching and learning ESOL in a range of contexts.

  1. Theoretical perspectives of language acquisition and language teaching.
  2. Different approaches and methodologies including current developments.
  3. Language systems and learners -linguistic problems.
  4. Language skills and learners- problems.
  5. Knowledge of resources, materials and reference sources for language learning.
  6. Key concepts and terminology related to assessment.

Module Two:

This module is course-based and includes a Professional Development Assignment, four Language systems/skills assignments (including essay and observed lessons) and attendance of input sessions.

Focus on developing the candidate’s awareness and expertise in relation to the principles and professional practice of teaching ESOL in a range of contexts.

  1. The language learner and the language learning context.
  2. Preparation for teaching adult learners of English.
  3. Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes.
  4. Managing and supporting learning.
  5. Evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching.
  6. Observation / Evaluation of other teachers‘ lessons.
  7. Professionalism and opportunities for professional development.

Module Three:

This takes the form of an extended written assignment investigating a specialism within English language teaching and planning a course for a specific student or group of students.

Focus on broadening the candidate’s knowledge of a chosen specialism and developing their understanding of syllabus design, testing and assessment.

  1. Research into specialist areas.
  2. Syllabus design: principles, influences on, methodological effects of, and major syllabus types as applied to the specific learning context.
  3. Designing syllabus and teaching programmes to meet the needs of learners in the specific context of their selected specialism.
  4. Course design and development in the specific context of their selected specialism.
  5. The principles and practice of testing and assessment and application to the candidate’s specialist area.
  6. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and quality of courses and programmes of study.

Before you submit an application, please ensure the following:
  1. That you will be able to give the commitment that the course requires?
  2. That you will be free to attend all the Fridays and the intensive week (for the part-time course) and able to attend Monday to Friday all 8 weeks (for the full-time course)?
  3. That you will be able to provide suitable adult classes for observation with a minimum of 5 students (for the part-time course only)?
  4. That you have easy access to word processing and printing facilities?

Points 2 and 3 may involve checking with your employer.

DATES AND FEES

AKCENT International House Prague runs full-time, part-time and distance courses for the Delta Modules

Course Requirements: 

All applicants must have a level of basic education that qualifies them for university-level study. In addition: 

Module 1 – Applicants should have an initial qualification in teaching English (CELTA or equivalent) and at least 1 year experience teaching. 

Module 2 – Applicants should have an initial qualification in teaching English, at least two years’ experience teaching, and ideally will either have taken the M1 exam, or enrolled in our M1 course. 

Module 3 – Applicants should have an initial qualification in teaching English, at least two years’ experience with teaching, and ideally will have taken the M1 exam and completed M2 or be enrolled or enrolling in our M1 and M2 courses at the time of the application. 

It is not required that the modules be taken in order, though doing so may be beneficial for many candidates. 

All candidates for DELTA Modules must submit an application and successfully pass an interview.

Module 3 1-to-1 course with personalised 1-to-1 consultation: 

This course includes the exam fee and personalised guidance and consultations with an experienced tutor. 

The course fee includes: 

  • a pre-writing meeting to solidify your focus and plans, and for you to ask questions about your topic and paper. 
  • a read-through of your first draft with detailed comments on each section of your paper as you write it, to ensure that you are on track for a successful paper. 
  • a final read-through of your fully assembled submission draft and appendices with a second round of detailed notes, if possible from a second experienced tutor. 
  • The exam fee and submission of your paper through our exam centre. 

 

Should you need more assistance than this: 

Additional help can be arranged directly with your tutor at their discretion, and at their hourly rate.

 

When to apply Modules 1 and 2 courses – we consider applications in the order of application and places are allocated until the course in question is full or until a week before the course, whichever is first. If you require a visa to study in the Czech Republic (which is in the Schengen Area of the EU), then you should ensure you leave enough time to apply for a visa after acceptance. The visa process can take a month and, in some countries, even longer. For information about applying for a Czech visa, please contact your nearest Czech consulate.

Accommodation

If you are taking the full-time Delta modules 1 and 2, then you can arrange accommodation through the school and this costs €980 for 8 weeks.

 

IF YOU NEED TO ACQUIRE VISA TO ENTER THE CZECH REPUBLIC, AND ...

  • you need an invitation letter, please contact Marki, who is able to send you the letter once you have been accepted and made the payment of the course fees
  • you did not get your visa in time and will inform us more than 10 working days before the course starting date we´ll refund the whole fee minus 100 Euro admin fee
  • you did not get your visa in time and will inform us less than 10 working days before the course starting date, no refund will be given but we can consider transferring the fees to another course (subject to availability)

We strongly recommend to check the lenght of the visa process at your nearest Czech embassy before applying to the course.

 

DELTA CANCELATION POLICY
If your face to face DELTA course has been cancelled due to COVID-19 situation:

  • You can be automatically transferred onto a fully on-line DELTA course scheduled for very same dates.
  • You can select a later date for an on-line DELTA course.
  • You can postpone your participation to a face to face course until these become possible again.
  • If none of the options above work for you, you can be refunded the course fees. Refunds (minus 150€ admin fee) will be paid within 8 weeks after receiving your full bank details. Accommodation refunds will depend on whether or not the school has already paid the deposit to the landlord.

If you have paid the full fee:

  • In the case of cancellation 6 weeks or more before the course starting date, the whole fee (course fee, or course fee + accommodation) will be refunded minus 100€ admin fee.
  • With less than 6 weeks‘ notice, 50% of the total course fee will be refunded.
  • If cancellation occurs in the final 10 working days before the starting date, no refund will be given.
  • However, we will consider transferring the fees to another course (conditional upon vacancies) but a 20% cancellation fee will be charged if this change will be made in less than 4 weeks before the course starting date.
  • We reserve the right to cancel a course if fewer than 4 people are enrolled. In this case we can transfer your fees to any future course or refund the fees you have paid in full.
  • Refunds will be paid within 8 weeks after receiving your full bank details.

If you have paid a 50% deposit:

  • In the case of cancellation 6 weeks or more before the course starting date, 80% of the deposit paid (course fee, or course fee + accommodation) will be refunded.
  • With less than 6 weeks‘ notice, no refund will be given.
  • However, we will consider transferring the fees to another course (conditional upon vacancies) but a 20% cancellation fee will be charged if this change will be made in less than 4 weeks before the course starting date.
  • We reserve the right to cancel a course if fewer than 4 people are enrolled. In this case we can transfer your fees to any future course or refund the fees you have paid in full.
