TKT is an international exam designed exclusively for teachers of English as a foreign language. In the Czech context, it is particularly suitable for teachers at primary, secondary, and language schools.
By passing the exam, teachers obtain an internationally recognized certificate issued by Cambridge ESOL (which also organizes language exams such as FCE, CAE, etc.). Since the exam is only written, it tests the knowledge needed to teach English, not skills. The minimum required level of English is B1/B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The exam is not language-based and does not include listening, fluency, or writing longer texts. Teachers should have at least some short-term teaching experience.
The exam and preparatory course are suitable for different types of teachers
TYPE 1
A teacher with several years of experience, a state exam, and therefore a good level of English, but without formal teaching qualifications, except for participation in several seminars and conferences.
TYPE 2
A teacher qualified to teach other subjects (e.g., Russian) who teaches English because the school has a shortage of qualified English teachers. They would like to learn specific methods suitable for teaching English.
TYPE 3
A teacher who wants to measure their knowledge on an international scale and possibly travel abroad in the future, e.g., on a teacher exchange program between schools within the EU.
TYPE 4
A qualified teacher who would like to refresh their knowledge, learn new and more modern methods, and become familiar with new teaching materials.
TYPE 5
A teacher who wishes to improve their language skills and knowledge and would prefer to do so in classes focused on teaching English rather than in general English classes. They hope that this will also open the way for them to read methodological guides and materials available on the market only in English.
The TKT preparation course not only focuses on preparing candidates for the exam, but also offers a wide range of practical activities and ideas for teaching English. Structure of the intensive course The course runs from Monday to Friday. Each day is divided into three blocks – seminars.
The course also includes homework, mainly in the form of practice tests. The seminars are led by qualified teachers with many years of international experience. Candidates use a special TKT textbook (included in the price) and a range of other useful materials.
