Course Work
Pre-course work
- A suggested pre-course reading list is provided to successful applicants – although, as its name suggests, this is suggested reading but not required reading.
Workload in general
The Delta Modules represent a huge commitment.
- As far as reading is concerned, Cambridge ESOL estimates this at 300 hours for all three modules, though the real figure is probably higher.
- Work on the assignments (detailed below) involves an enormous amount of time, effort, lesson planning time, reading/research and writing (a probable minimum of 20,000 words). Easy access to word processing (and printing!) facilities is essential. Should we mention e-mail here as most of the work has to be submitted electronically?
- In the later stages of the course, examination preparation (Module One) will also take up a considerable amount of time.
- As mentioned above, the course is partly continuously assessed and partly externally assessed. The constant presence of assessment can make the course quite a stressful experience. As it is likely that you will not pass every assignment at the first attempt, this may therefore result in your having to resubmit: an additional load.
As you can see, you may feel under a great deal of pressure much of the time. Social lives may need to be curtailed, and you may need to minimise other commitments. Families/partners will need to be warned that they will see less of you during the course!
Other Requirements
Candidates are required to observe at least ten hours of teaching by other experienced teachers. You will be advised on this once the course begins.
